HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – Teachers gathered on the capitol steps Tuesday, calling attention to the ongoing teacher shortage.

They’re seeking a $75 million investment for the student teacher stipend program.

The $10 million allocated for the program funds less than 700 students, though the state received 3,000 applications within two hours of the application window opening.

Advocates say that highlights high demand.

“Investing in educators is an investment in the quality of education for children in America, which is an investment in our collective future,” Maggie Shatzer, a Shippensburg University student and future student teacher, said. “All of this begins with fully funding the student teacher stipen.

Governor Josh Shapiro proposed an additional $5 million for the program.
