Heavy fighting on in Mazar-i-Sharif, Indian mission staff safe

Explosions and gunfire rang out last night as militants attempted to storm the Indian diplomatic mission in Mazar-i-Sharif. Indian and Afghan security forces were jointly engaged in a gun-battle with at least two unidentified attackers, who attempted to strike the Indian consulate here. In all 4-5 attackers were believed to have launched the attack, sources said. Read more here

RM Lodha panel submits report on BCCI

The RM Lodha-led panel submitted its report to the apex court earlier today. Suggesting massive changes in the functioning of the BCCI, the panel proposed a slew of measures. Among them being – one person one post, no proxy voting of individuals, No BCCI office-bearer can have more than two consecutive terms, No BCCI office-bearer can be Minister or government servant. Magnitude 6.7 earthquake hits Northeast region

The Northeast as well as several eastern states including Jharkhand and West Bengal felt moderate tremors early this morning. In Imphal, six people lost their lives and at least 30 people were injured. Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted that his office is closely monitoring the relief measures and an NDRF team has already been rushed to the site. Read more here

Pathankot operation still on, toll mounts to 7

The Indian Air Force (IAF) air base remains the scene of intense gun battles after at least two more terrorists emerged from hiding on Sunday and engaged security forces throughout the day. The total number of security personnel killed in the operation went up to seven — Lt Col Niranjan Kumar of the National Security Guard (NSG), five Defence Security Corps (DSC) personnel and an Air Force Garud commando. Sensex extends losses, tumbles 400 pts on global cues

The benchmark BSE Sensex plunged bymore than 400 points in the late morning session to crack below the 26,000-level as global political and economic headwinds hit the investor sentiment.

Asian stocks took a major hit after Chinese manufacturing data contracted for a fifth straight month. Consequently, Shanghai index plunged more than 7 per cent and was halted for the rest of the day.

Govt to allow private train operators in India’s first bullet-train corridor

As per the decision, Indian Railways will operate the bullet train corridor for five years after it is commissioned. After that private players will run the train service — translating into managing the rolling stock, the onboard services, the fares and other charges. Read more here.
