Conditions perfect for wildfires today in Alabama

Red flag warnings

The Alabama counties in pink will be under red flag warnings on Wednesday. A red flag warning means that conditions are favorable for wildfires -- and they could spread quickly.

It’s not a good idea to do any outdoor burning today.

The National Weather Service said the combination of gusty winds and low humidity will make conditions perfect for wildfires across much of Alabama today.

Any fires that ignite will likely spread quickly, according to forecasters.

The weather service has issued red flag warnings for all of the state except north Alabama for Wednesday.

Red flag warnings, which aren’t issued all that often in Alabama, mean that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will shortly.

* A red flag warning will be in effect for all of central Alabama on Wednesday from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m., according to the weather service in Birmingham.

Forecasters said winds will be 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph, and humidity levels will be as low as 20 to 25 percent.

* A red flag warning will be in effect for all of southwest Alabama until 7 p.m. Wednesday, according to the weather service in Mobile.

A fire weather watch will also be in effect for southwest Alabama on Thursday.

The weather service said winds will be 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph today, and the humidity will be as low as 17 percent.

* A red flag warning will be in effect for southeast Alabama from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. CDT Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service in Tallahassee, Fla.

The weather service said winds will be 15 to 20 mph with higher gusts, and the humidity will be 23 to 27 percent.

More dry and breezy weather will be possible in Alabama on Thursday as well.

The winds are being generated by the pressure difference between Hurricane Ian to the southeast of Alabama and an area of high pressure to the west, according to forecasters.
