LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - JCPS is thinking outside the box, and outside the country, when looking for new teachers to join the district.

Right now, they have about 300 teacher openings.

This week, three bilingual JCPS human resources employees are recruiting in Puerto Rico. They will spend a week in several cities in Puerto Rico to reestablish connections, interview teachers, and talk to college students studying to become teachers. A similar recruiting trip in 2017 led to 20 teachers moving to Louisville and joining JCPS.

Cheryl Armado is one of them. Now, she’s a kindergarten teacher at Goldsmith Elementary.

“By the time I came, there was already a group of Puerto Ricans working here, and they kind of support me, they kind of cheer me up and kind of received me even when I arrive here at the airport,” Armado said. “They kind of welcomed me and gave me a tour around old Louisville.”

Currently, JCPS has nearly 40 teachers and other employees who are natives of Puerto Rico.
