SUPERIOR — April is National County Government Month, which highlights the vital role of county governments in serving their communities. Since 1991, the National Association of Counties has encouraged counties across the United States to promote their services and engage with residents through various activities and events.
In Douglas County, this month is an opportunity to showcase the county's commitment to providing cost-effective services, enhancing partnerships and responsibly managing resources. From public meetings and community events to educational programs, Douglas County actively participates in raising public awareness about the essential functions of county government and fostering civic engagement among its residents.
National Weather Service Duluth is hosting a Skywarn Spotter Training at 6 p.m. Monday, April 14, at the Douglas County Highway Operations Center, 7417 County Road E, Hawthorne. The free training teaches about thunderstorm safety, the science of thunderstorms, cloud formations and what they mean, relaying reports to the National Weather Service, and more. Don’t let the snow fool you! Spring wildfire season is upon us. The main cause of wildfires this time of year is burning brush and leaf piles. Burning permits are required in DNR forest fire protection areas, including Douglas County, anytime the ground is not completely snow-covered. Permit holders are authorized to burn vegetative materials, such as leaves, brush and needles, and are designed so that burning is done safely with minimal wildfire risk. Permits are free of charge and can be obtained on the DNR website or by calling 1-888-947-2876.
It’s important to note that some areas of the state are not regulated by the DNR. Check with local municipal or fire department officials for any ordinances or other burning restrictions.
Check out the Douglas County Highway Department on the new Douglas County Drive video series. Interim Administrator Dave Sletten takes the viewer along to tour the Highway Department and do a ride-along. The video can be found on the Highway Department’s Facebook page and the county website.
There is one meeting on the calendar next week:
Zoning Committee meets on Wednesday, April 9 at 9 a.m. in Board Room 201 of the Government Center in Superior.
