Two wildfires within national park ‘being observed’
Both the Whitetail Creek wildfire on the west boundary of Kootenay National Park, and the Wardle wildfire in the park’s Vermilion Valley are now classed as ‘Being Observed.’
The Whitetail Creek fire is now an estimated 1,335 hectares in size and the Wardle Wildfire, which caused numerous closures of Highway 93, is now an estimated 3,600 ha.
Parks Canada explained Sept. 13 in a final update on the fires that it will continue to monitor these fires and they are not expected to spread given prevailing and forecasted conditions.
Additionally, like in the rest of the East Kootenay, the campfire ban is being lifted today, September 14 at noon, for Redstreak Campground in Kootenay National Park due to recent precipitation and cooler temperatures that have lowered the fire danger.
The fire ban has already been lifted elsewhere in Kootenay, Yoho and Banff national parks.
The Simpson River (Verdant closure zone) area is now open.
Some additional closures associated with the wildfires remain in place. Up-to-date information.
