CLEARWATER, FLORIDA, USA, September 27, 2018 / -- The Church of Scientology Flag Service Organization and the Scientology Volunteer Ministers (VMs) of Florida are holding a Hurricane Florence disaster relief supplies drive in the VMs’ downtown Clearwater Center.

Florence made landfall 10 days ago as a Category 1 storm with winds of 74 to 95 mph. This created significant property damage and severe flooding. While the full force of the storm has passed, it has left over 10,000 people in shelters and over 45 areas flooded, with a loss of power to 50,000 people.

Dozens of Scientology VMs are either in North Carolina or on their way to help in the aftermath of the hurricane. VMs have transported hundreds of hygiene kits and thousands of bottles of water and donated clothing for people in shelters.

To continue the support of those in need in the Carolinas, the Scientology Volunteer Ministers Center and the Scientology Information Center are accepting donations of travel-size hygiene supplies and clothing to provide to the evacuees. Hygiene supplies can be dropped off at the Scientology Information Center in Downtown Clearwater at 500 Cleveland Street, open Monday-Sunday 10am-10pm.

“The way we look at it is, no one should ever turn a blind eye to those suffering in the world,” said Amber Skjelset, Manager of the Scientology Information Center.

The Scientology Volunteer Minister program was launched some forty years ago, in response to an appeal by Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard. Noting a tremendous downturn in the level of ethics and morality in society, and a consequent increase in drugs and crime, Mr. Hubbard wrote, “If one does not like the crime, cruelty, injustice and violence of this society, he can do something about it. He can become a VOLUNTEER MINISTER.” Accordingly, in addition to traveling to wherever disaster strikes, Renowned for their disaster relief, Volunteer Ministers have trained and partnered with over 1,000 different groups, organizations and agencies around the world, including the Red Cross, National Guard, Army Cadets, Salvation Army, Boy Scouts and disaster management agencies.
