Greenpeace MENA: Heatwaves are hitting the Gulf, and the Entire Region is Boiling While Solutions Exist

BEIRUT, LEBANON, May 26, 2025 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Greenpeace Middle East and North Africa (MENA) is sounding the alarm as extreme heatwaves sweep across the region. This week, the United Arab Emirates shattered its May temperature record for the second consecutive day, reaching a staggering 51.6°C in Abu Dhabi—just 0.4°C shy of the country’s all-time high. In Kuwait, temperatures remained close to 50°C throughout the week. Meanwhile, Morocco issued an official heatwave alert for several provinces, and Iraq and Egypt are grappling with an intense increase in temperature.

Kenzie Azmi, Regional Campaigns Lead at Greenpeace MENA, commented:

“These conditions are no longer rare; they are the new normal in a region heating at nearly twice the global average. These extreme temperatures have arrived earlier than ever, as Hajj season is about to start. The conditions threaten public health, and underscore the region’s acute vulnerability to the escalating climate crisis. Will last year’s Hajj pilgrimage scenario be repeated?”.

“For years and years, we have been ringing the climate alarm bell, calling for climate justice for our region, and a fair transition to renewable energy. It is unfair that our region is still paying the price for global inaction and silence.”

“Even though our region is not historically responsible for the problem, we are among those suffering the most. That's why Greenpeace MENA calls on our leaders to move faster, to protect our people, communities, economies, and our future. This means investing more in existing solutions that help us adapt and speeding up the shift to renewable energy. This also means playing a leading role in holding Global North countries accountable for delivering adequate climate finance to the Global South at international climate talks.”
